June 2011

For my first step I booked a routine appointment with my dentist, and whilst I was there I thought would seek his professional opinion.  As I suspected he confirmed that my teeth did appear to have moved and he could not guarantee that this would not get any worse.  He agreed that I could consider orthodontic treatment and suggested I go and see a specialist orthodontist for their opinion. He made the point that dentists sometime do orthodontics but that is a bit like your GP trying to be a hospital consultant, orthodontic specialists have specific training and only fit braces day in day out.   He made a recommendation of a couple of local practices.  In the meantime he recommended a hygienist appointment to check my gums.  He told me to let him know what I decided and he would happily write a referral letter to an orthodontist.  To be honest I had already made my decision, I was going to get braces.

I spend hours on the net looking at articles and sizing up the options – although I knew I could not judge what would be suitable for me.  I felt as though I should be an honorary member of the British Orthodontic Society the amount of time I spent on their site.
